This year some teams are being just phenomenal. The Phillies, the new owners of the Cy Young winner Cliff Lee, very well have a chance at making the big series. This year has brought many surprises and has had some teams that some people thought would never stand a chance.
There have been disappointments this season as well. Some teams who had high playoff hopes are all but mathematically eliminated at this point.
So far this season many teams have had a struggle. Others, however, are flying through this season like it’s a breeze. The Nationals are one of the teams that are struggling. The Nats are in dead last in the whole league. We can count them out of the playoffs.
The same goes for the Orioles, Pirates, Padres, Athletics, Royals, Blue Jays, Indians, Twins, Mets, Diamondbacks, Reds, Astros, and Brewers. That leaves a remaining 16 teams. We must eliminate more.
Now comes the Wild Card Race. The Red Sox are currently leading the American League race, while the Rockies are holding on in the National league. Now as the race stands I believe that the Red Sox will hold on, but in the National league I think that it will be a closer race.
If this were the case, the Yanks, Sox, Tigers, and Angels would round out the American League playoff picture and the Braves, Cards, Dodgers, and Phillies would represent the National League.
Most are predicting the Yankees and Phillies to come out on top in each league, though teams like the Dodgers and Angels are seriously looking great. While I do think that there’s a chance that the Dodgers could emerge in the National League, I don’t see the Angels as strong enough in the American League, especially when it comes to their starting pitching staff. If anyone, the Tigers may stand a better chance. However, here’s what I think will end up happening:
The 2009 World Series champions will be the Phillies, over the Yankees. There, I said it.

Statistically speaking, this has been a very interesting 2009 baseball season. ERAs are lower across the board, and you have to wonder if this is due to a pullback in steroid use or due to the emergence of some exceptional pitchers. I say it’s a little of each. Here are the top five contenders for the NL Cy Young award in 2009, all of it subject to change.
Dan Haren. Haren’s WHIP of 0.89 is the best in baseball, and his 2.59 ERA isn’t too far behind. While he plays for a team that’s out of contention, Haren has been a benchmark of consistency for most of the season.
Haren was arguably the best pitcher in baseball for most of the season, having had a 1.96 ERA as recently as July 18th. Lately, it hasn’t been all great for Haren, who’s given up 4 or more ER in three of his last four starts. Haren is known to drop off during the late part of the season, and should the trend continue, the chances for a Cy Young don’t look as good as they did just a few short weeks ago.
Wandy Rodriguez (11-6, 2.51 ERA, 1.20 WHIP). Perhaps the most impressive thing about Wandy Rodriguez (aside from the fact that this season seemingly came out of nowhere) is what he’s done on the mound since July. Rodriguez has been legitimately exceptional since July 2nd, having given up a total of just 4 ER in his last 7 starts (and 47.0 IP). That amounts to an ERA of 1.34 over the span, and if he keeps it up, he’s sure to make a legitimate case for himself.
Matt Cain. In any other given year, Cain’s ERA of 2.44 would be good enough to win the Cy Young on its own, and virtually a lock. It’s been a crazy season though, and Cain has company, most notably from teammate Tim Lincecum. Still, Cain has been tremendous in 2009 and should finish the season with 17 or 18 wins to go with some great numbers.
Chris Carpenter (12-3, 2.27 ERA, 0.98 WHIP). Who knew that Carpenter still had it. One of the best pitchers in baseball just a few years ago, Carpenter missed nearly all of 2007 and 2008, and most of the baseball world either forgot about him or wrote him off. At 34 years old, Carpenter looks as good as ever before, with what has been an incredible season of pitching so far. Carpenter has amazingly surrendered just 19 walks in 130 innings pitched, one of the reasons for his career low 2.27 ERA. It’s no coincidence the Cardinals lead their division.
Tim Lincecum. With a 12-3 record, a 2.19 ERA, and a 1.02 WHIP, Lincecum’s ERA is the best in baseball and his strikeouts are far and away the best in baseball. Lincecum currently has 205 strikeouts, best in the majors, and may become the first pitcher to crack the 300 mark in a season since 2002. The award is his to lose at this point.
In addition to the pitchers above, there are a few other pitchers in the midst of exceptional seasons who could very easily contend for the award with a strong finish in August and September. These pitchers include the likes of Johan Santana, Adam Wainwright, Josh Johnson, Clayton Kershaw, and Javier Vazqeuz. Each of their seasons easily could have won the award in prior seasons. Should be an interesting finish.
Who has the best batting average and rings, etc.
I’ve been looking through many answers but none definite. Does anyone know when Fantasy Baseball starts this year for Yahoo?
