How Did Former Balitmore Oriole Baseball Player, John W. “boog” Powell Get That Odd Nickname?

Powell was a power hitting first baseman for the Orioles in the late 60's thru the mid-70's. Growing up, I was an avid Oriole fan....and yet, I never heard any explanation.

He made a self portrait out of boogers in the home dugout
‘Powell could also be mischievous, in the way that he joked and played pranks on others. In fact, that’s how he obtained the nickname “Boog.” As a child, John Wesley Powell sometimes misbehaved, leading his parents to say, “What’s that little booger up to now?” Booger eventually was shortened to Boog, giving Powell his memorable moniker.’

Bob is correct.
Man, Powell was a big guy for those days… In one of my Met year books (1971 probably), there’s a picture (taken at an All Star game) of Mets shortstop Bud Harrelson standing between Boog Powell and Frank Howard… Harrelson looked like a little kid standing between his father and his father’s best friend. Harrelson was listed at 5-11 160 lbs, while Powell was 6′4 240 and Howard was 6′7 and 255.
