In 1979 Dave Parker signed a contract that paid him $1,000,000 a year, although it was structured in such a way that it didn’t read like that. The Pirates played word games so no one thought they were paying a baseball player that kind of money – but they were.
In 1980 Nolan Ryan signed the first contract that clearly said outright that the player was getting $1,000,000 a year.
