Don’t know what the rule is, but it real does suck when they do that. I’ve seen other baseball games where the fans have done that. In away it’s be nice to see the catcher smack em……LOL
I am an angel fan as was bummed when the fan caught the ball. The ball was actually in the stands the the first baeman was reaching into the stands to try to catch the ball.
Even though it looks like he could have caught the ball, the fan did nothing wrong because the ball was falling into the stands.
If a fan reaches into the playing field, it is considered fan interference and the umpire takes action based on what would have (or sometimes could have) happened. The fan can be removed from the stadium (and barred from coming back) for interference.
Hey, wanna speak french, learn English first, bud. Oh, and the kid did not reach over, it came right to him, he had every right to go for it.
If the ball is in the stands it is fair game for players & fans alike. If a fan reaches out of the stands, over the playing field, then that is considered fan interference & it is up to the umpires to decide what to call.
They may call the batter out in a pop-up situation, or a ground rule double in a situation like the barry bonds one you mentioned. Basically the umpires are saying the ball would not have been a homerun, it would have hit the wall & he most likely would have hit a double.
fans can’t reach over into play but a player can catch a ball that is out of play and get an out…
Eric M: ppl are making a big deal cause manny hit that foul… the inning continued and escobar was pulled… cause the sox got him deep into pitch counts…the game got tied and that makes it a whole new game cause now the sox can bring in paplebon okie and delcarmen…
that play was huge! and it is further evidence that the curse is reversed… that plus the walk off… and those canadian soliders in cleveland…
If you reach on to the field it is ruled a ground rule double if the player couldn’t make a play (has to be fair, obviously!).
If a fan reaches over to catch a ball on the field and a ball is trying to make a play the umpires can rule fan interference and call the batter out!
Last night’s play was called correctly because the ball would not have landed in the field but in the stands or the press box, both are fair game for fans!
Are you serious? He didn’t reach over to grab the ball, it sailed right into his glove. I don’t know why people are making a big deal out of this. Boston would’ve won anyway, only difference is, they would’ve won 5-3 instead of 6-3, and would’ve been down one run heading into the 9th.
The umpire can make the ruling. If he wants to get a fan out of the stands and let him bat or pitch, he can do that.
The umpire is like a black and white striped, whistle blowing, nut scratching, hiney slapping, tobacco spitting, girl watching, salsa farting god!
