Originally drafted by the Mariners and was known then as David Arias.
Traded to the Twins for Dave Hollins in 1996. He played with the Twins until 2002, when they non-tendered him after the 2002 season - fearing he would get a big raise in arbitration.
He then signed with the Red Sox and has been the heart and soul of their line-up since.

He originally was signed by the Mariners, and was in their minor league system for a while. In 1996 Seattle traded sent him to Minnesota as the player to be named later in a deal they made for Dave Hollins a month earlier. The Twins released him after the 2002 season and the Red Sox signed him January of 2003.
He played in Minnesota first. Seattle traded him for someone that I can’t remember. He never had a good year here, so we didn’t want to re-sign him for $800,000 so we let him go as a free agent. Pedro talked him into going to Boston, where he turned out to be a decent player.
He was origanally a Minnesota Twin. Than the BoSox got him and he’s been protected by Manny
In 1992 , when he was17 he was signed by the Seattle Mariners then was traded to the Minnesota Twins in 1996. He made his debut in 1997 for the Twins
